How iron-on patches are made
An iron-on patch has a thin film of heat-activated glue bonded to the back. Thirty seconds of firm pressure from a hot iron melts the film into the fabric fibres and the patch is on. It is the fastest way to apply a patch and needs no sewing skill at all, which makes it ideal for personal projects, event merchandise and anything going on cotton or denim.

Iron-On Patches FAQ
Will it come off in the wash?
Not if applied properly, but adhesive is still adhesive. For garments washed weekly, or anything heavy, we recommend a few stitches around the edge as insurance. It takes two minutes and makes it permanent.
Why can I not iron onto a nylon jacket?
Nylon melts at roughly the temperature needed to activate the glue, so you would damage the jacket. Use velcro or sew-on for nylon and other synthetics.
