How chenille & varsity patches are made
Chenille is the raised, fuzzy patch you know from letterman jackets — made from looped yarn stitched onto a wool or felt base, usually with a contrasting felt border and a chain-stitched outline. It has serious physical presence: thick, soft and tactile in a way no other patch is. Chenille works best at larger sizes with bold, simple shapes, which is exactly why it suits letters, numbers, mascots and team names.

Chenille / Varsity FAQ
Why is there a minimum size?
Chenille yarn is thick. Below about 3 inches the loops crowd together and the design loses its shape. For small detailed work, embroidery is the better choice.
Can I mix chenille with embroidery?
Yes, and it looks excellent. A common combination is a chenille letter with an embroidered team name stitched across it. Just mention it on your quote request.
Which backing should I pick for a jacket?
Sew-on. Chenille patches are heavy and go on garments that get worn hard, so stitching is the reliable choice. Iron-on is available but we recommend stitching the edges as well.
